Edna-Helen Mackie Walton Edna-Helen Mackie Walton of Ardmore (formerly of Gladwyne) passed away on Jan. 3, 2010 at Lankenau Hospital. She was 85 years young. Mrs. Walton was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of the Reverend Joseph Bolton Cooper Mackie and Helen Dobbs Mackie. She attended Friends Select School and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. Upon graduation, Mrs. Walton began her career in social work with the Philadelphia Society to Protect Children from Cruelty. She eventually made her professional way into the field of Early Childhood Education, first as a teacher at the Ardmore Presbyterian Church Weekday Pre-School and then serving as the Director of the Buck Lane Memorial Community Day Care Center in Haverford for 20 years. In early retirement, Mrs. Walton also worked for the Federation Day Care Lokoff Early Learning Center in West Philadelphia. She was a long-time member of the Ardmore Presbyterian Church. She delighted in beachcombing along her beloved Jersey Shore, working in her garden, painting, reading, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Walton is survived by her son, Christopher Walton of Oakland, Calif.; daughters Kathie W. Nelson and Betsy W. Clemence, both of Ardmore, Pa.; three grandchildren: Andrew Nelson of Philadelphia; Emily Clemence of Ardmore; and Timothy Nelson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and son-in-law, Robert M. Nelson of Ardmore.
