Joseph W. Foote, DMD, MD, of Ardmore, PA, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Fri Feb. 26, 2010 at the age of 61. of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma.
The New York native received his Bachelors Degree from the College of Holy Cross in 1970. In 1974, he earned his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He then served a dental internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, and from 1975 to 1977, served a two year residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. From 1977 to 1980, he completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He then returned to the Medical College of Pennsylvania where he received his medical degree in 1985 and served a medical residency at Presbyterian Medical Center following his graduation. He was first appointed to the faculty in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. For the next twenty-five years, he served as full-time faculty in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department and also held the titles of Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (from 1989 to present) and Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center (from 1989 to present). He was board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was a member of the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the International Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Foote was held in high regard by his students, residents and fellow faculty. During his 30-year career, hundreds of dentists and physicians referred complex patients to him. He was nationally recognized for his particular expertise in microsurgical repair of maxillofacial nerve injuries. He was clearly the “doctor of last resort” for patients with debilitating facial pain who relied on him for his technical skill, but also for his never ending benevolence and empathy. He championed care for those less fortunate and no patient was ever denied his skill and care regardless of circumstances.
He was the beloved husband of Susan Foote(nee Quinn) and devoted father of Katie, Emily, Joey, Meredith, Amanda, Travis and Conor. He is also survived by his father, Joseph W. Foote, Sr and his sisters and brother, Donna, Brian, Sharon, Denise, Colleen, Patti and Michele along with many nieces and nephews.
The Family will receive guests on Sun. from 4-8pm in the Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home, 30 E. Athens Ave. Ardmore, PA. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Mon. March 1st, 10am in Our Mother of Good Cousel Church, 31 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery, Ardmore.
