Obituary:
The Reverend William R. McKean, Jr., 81, a Priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania for 53 years, died Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, after a long illness in Glen Mills, P A. The son of the late Dr. and Mrs. W. Roulston Mckean, he was a graduate of Episcopal Academy, 1947, and Trinity College, Hartford, CT, Class of 1951. He spent two years in the Army, after which he attended the Philadelphia Divinity School for 3 years, from which he graduated with Honors. Mr. McKean was ordained in May 1956, and two weeks later was married to the former Nancy Price. Together, they started his ministry as a Curate at Holy Apostles and The Mediator, West Philadelphia, after which they moved to Grace Church, Hulmeville, Bucks County. In 1966, with his wife and two daughters, he moved to Drexel Hill, Delaware County, where he became the Rector of The Church ofthe Holy Comforter for 27 years. Mr. McKean was known for his counseling and pastoral skills to his flock. After retiring in 1993, he served as Priest in Charge at St. Mark's Church, Honeybrook, and as Pastoral Minister at st. John's, Concord. In addition to his church duties, he served as Chaplin at the Home of the Merciful Savior, West Philadelphia for forty years. The McKeans moved to Maris Grove retirement community, Glen Mills, in 2007, where he was a member of the Veterans' Club, and was also instrumental in starting the Episcopal Service for residents there. Mr. McKean enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a golfer and a member of Rolling Green Country Club, Springfield. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy (Price), and his daughters, Lynn Eglseder,and Susan Gelsomini and her husband, Mark, and 5 grandchildren. Relatives and Friends are invited to greet the family on Wed. evening from 7-9 pm at St. John's Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Rd., Glen Mills, Pa 19342. His Memorial Service will be held on Thurs. April 8th, 11 am in The Church of the Holy Comforter, Burmont Rd. and Bond Ave., Drexel Hill, PA 19026, where you may call after 9am. Interment will immediately follow at St. John's Episcopal Churchyard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill's memory to either of the above mentioned Churches.
