John Harvey Nash, formerly of Rosemont and then a resident of Riddle Village, Media, for the last 8 years, died on April 22. He was 88 years of age. John was predeceased by his loving wife, Blanche Lubovich, in 1981. Born in Bryn Mawr to Frances and Thomas Nash, John (also known as Harvey) graduated from Haverford High School in 1939. Losing his father at a very young age, John then attended The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Media where he was a four-letter athlete and graduated in 1942.
Upon graduation from Williamson, John joined the Air Force pilot training program. He loved flying, but two weeks before getting his license, it was announced that there was an immediate need for bombardiers and that he would need to change course. He became a bombardier on the B-17 Flying Fortress Wee Willie’s Wolves. A member of the 7th Bombardment Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group, John flew 33 missions in the Eighth Air Force in WWII, became a bombardier instructor, and attained the rank of 1st lieutenant. He was awarded the Air Medal and four Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement and demonstrating “courage, coolness, and skill”. John was one of six brothers, five of whom served our country in that war. His older brother Stanley lost his life in Casino, Italy, during that conflict.
A lifelong and active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Bryn Mawr, John was a member of St. Luke’s Angels where he was co-captain and starting pitcher of the softball team--champions in the Main Line Softball League. He was also a member of the basketball team and bowling squad. John captured the attention of Wynnewood Lanes the night he bowled a 289. He continued his love of sports and competition when he moved to Riddle Village. You’ll find his name more than a few times in the pool and shuffleboard championship records.
Upon discharge from the Air Force, John worked alongside his brother James for Delmac Plumbing Supply Company in Narberth. He then helped his loving step-father, John Murray, maintain the 429 Apartments in Haverford and worked 25 years for the Bryn Mawr Post Office, retiring in 1986.
A compassionate son and brother, John faithfully helped care for his mother, his brother Thomas, and his brother Robert in their later years. Some of his happiest days were spent at family gatherings and playing sports with his brothers. There was particular joy in the many hunting and fishing adventures he shared with them. In his later life, John found that joy in watching his grandchildren on the playing fields.
John is survived by his older brother Francis (Bim) of West Chester, his pal and only child Nancy Pantano of Wayne, and his three grandchildren--Jason, Jesse, and Nina--all of whom were the light of his life.
Friends and family are invited to attend John’s memorial service on Saturday, May 8th, at 11:30 am at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Montgomery Ave. and Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr, PA In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s or The Williamson Free School.
