Obituary:
Vincent G. Bell, Jr., 84, a business leader, entrepreneur and amateur photographer who championed access to health care for the uninsured in Chester County, died Sunday, April 25, at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, after a long illness. Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, the son of Marguerite and Vincent Bell, he served with Patton’s 3rd Army in Europe during WWII. He graduated from Lehigh University, class of ’49 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After college, he moved to Philadelphia where he pursued his career. In 1955 he helped form Safeguard Industries and later became President and CEO of Safeguard Business Systems, which was sold in 1986. He then formed Verus Corporation, a private investment company. Mr. Bell served as Chairman of the World Affairs Council, Chairman of Paoli Memorial Hospital, and was on the Boards of Main Line Health, The Wistar Institute, Safeguard Scientifics, and many other business organizations. He was a long-time member of Young Presidents’ Organization and Chief Executives Organization. In 1998, Mr. Bell co-founded Community Volunteers In Medicine (CVIM), a primary care facility for the uninsured in Chester County. His love of fly fishing and his dedication to photography, enhanced his travels throughout the world, including his time spent at Pocono Lake Preserve. Mr. Bell and his wife, Elaine, were married for 57 years. They have three children; Scott Bell (Cathy), Meg Knysh (George), and Amy Bell, and six grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 8, at 3 p.m. at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Volunteers in Medicine, 300B Lawrence Drive, West Chester, PA 19380.
