GRACE PLOTNER BENSON
Grace Plotner Benson, Pioneer Culinary TV personality, died May 17,2010
in Bryn Mawr, PA one month short of her 100thbirthday.
Grace was born June 11, 1910 in Ambler, PA, the eldest of five children of
Elsie Mildred and Joseph Plotner. Grace graduated from Drexel University
in 1933 with a degree in Home Economics. After a brief time at F.W.
Woolworth & Co where she managed their restaurant in Atlantic City, she
began her forty year career with the Philadelphia Electric Co. In her early
years she helped pioneer the first cooking programs on Philadelphia TV and
later had her own radio program. She produced cooking programs in theaters
and on radio to promote "Live Better Electrically". In 1966, after building
many successful and innovative programs, in she was made the Director of
Home Service Department & Residential Lighting.
In 1968 she was the winner of the first Edison Electric Home Service Sales
Promotion Award. In 1988 she was honored by Drexel, her alma mater,
with the Harriet E. Worrell Distinguished Alumna Award for her
professional achievements and service to the university. She also received
numerous additional professional awards at both the local and national level
in home economics.
In retirement she continued to be active in the home economics field. In
addition she served on many community boards. Grace was involved at the
Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church where she was a member for over 60 years.
Grace Benson was preceded in death in 1987 by her beloved husband,
Arthur C. Benson, Sr. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Jean Benson
of Michigan, and her son Arthur C. Benson, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of
Colorado.
