BARBARA THORNBURGH BEST, of Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square and formerly of Wayne PA died on Wed. May 16th, 2012. She was the wife of author, the late Hugh Best. She was the daughter of Donald W.Thornburgh,a pioneer in radio and television,who headed CBS West Coast Division and, later, WCAU-TV, Philadelphia. Growing up in Los Angeles, she attended Marlborough School for Girls. She graduated from Stanford University, where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. After finishing a course in retailing at Prince School of Retailing (Simmons College , Boston) , she worked in the designer Adrian's salon in Robinson's of Beverly Hills, and after her children were raised, served as head of B. Altman's silver department in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. In 1991, The Emergency Aid of Philadelphia Foundation awarded her "for outstanding volunteer contributions to the need of the community." She was one of the founders of Main Line Meals On Wheels and The Mexican Society of Philadelphia. She had served on boards of The Junior League of Philadelphia; The Cosmopolitan Club; Children's Country Week Association, Wayne Woman's Exchange and Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. An avid golfer at Glenhardie Golf Club, one of her happiest moments was making a hole-in-one there. Collecting folk art was another Barbara Best passion, and her whimsical collection on 13 Christmas trees was featured in national magazines, TV,and as a major exhibit of the Kemerer Museum in Bethlehem, Pa. A world traveler,she co-authored BEST TRIPS with her husband in MAIN LINE MAGAZINE, and in recent years, TRAVEL pages for, the suburban weekly newspaper, MAIN LINE LIFE. She had been a member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church for over five decades. She is survived by her children, Donald, Christopher and Becky; and grandchildren, Trey, John, Katie, Henry and Joseph Hugh Best. Her Memorial Service will be held on Mon. May 21st, 10 AM in the Chapel of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to either Children's Country Week Assn., 1300 Valley Creek Rd., Downingtown, PA 19335 or Main Line Meals on Wheels, 235 Lancaster Ave., Devon, PA 19333
