Bernard Gerald Pearlman April 9, 1938 – July 19, 2026 Bernard Gerald Pearlman passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 88. Known affectionately as Bernie, he was born on April 9, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, to Harold Pearlman and Jean Elan. He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School in Brighton Beach and later Boston University, where he cultivated the lifelong love of learning and history that would become a defining part of who he was. Bernie dedicated his professional life to education and public service. He worked as a history teacher in New York City and later served as a truancy officer across the five boroughs, always committed to helping young people and strengthening his community. A lifelong New Yorker, Bernie possessed an extraordinary love for travel and a deep sense of adventure. As a young man, he was an active member of the New York Cycle Club and embraced the open road, bicycling hundreds of miles throughout the United States and abroad. He approached life with an open mind and an eagerness to experience the world and the people around him. In retirement, Bernie continued his commitment to service as a devoted volunteer for the New York City Public Library Book Sale. He remained a voracious reader and lifelong student of American and world history, always seeking to understand the world more deeply and connect with people from all walks of life. Bernie was known for his kindness, generosity, warmth, and unwavering belief in the value of friendship. He treasured his family and friends deeply. His compassion, curiosity, and genuine interest in others made everyone he met feel valued. Bernie proudly served in the National Guard and carried a lifelong dedication to his country. Often referring to himself as “The Everjoyful,” Bernie embodied optimism, resilience, and gratitude until his final days. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and service - truly a life lived fully and generously. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Bernie is survived by his beloved brother, Eugene (Ann); his niece, Rachel (Ryan); his grand-niece, Fiona Pearl; and his cherished cousins. A memorial celebrating Bernie’s life will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. In keeping with Bernie’s wishes and joyful spirit, guests are kindly requested not to wear black. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders in Bernie’s memory.
