Edgar Robert Kunz Jr., a longtime resident of Dunwoody Village, Newtown Square, PA, formerly of Merion, passed away on January 4, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on February 23, 1928, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Edgar was the beloved son of the late Edgar Robert Kunz Sr. He was married for 76 years to his devoted wife, Marilyn, with whom he shared a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Edgar was drafted into the United States Army Medical Department and served from 1946 to 1949 and again during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was educated at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating with honors in 1957. He was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors society and the W.D. Miller Research Society. Dr. Kunz was appointed Instructor in Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1958 and Assistant Professor in 1962, teaching until 1978. He practiced dentistry in Philadelphia with Dr. Louis I. Grossman before relocating his practice to Villanova, Pennsylvania, in 1977, where he later practiced with his son, Dr. Brian Kunz, until his retirement in 1994. He was among the first board-certified Diplomates in Endodontics in 1963. He served as past president of the Stomatological Club of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Dental Club, and the Academy of Stomatology. He was a member of the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Society, the Chester-Delaware County Dental Society, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Beyond his professional life, Edgar was deeply involved in his community. He was a former Deacon at Woodland Presbyterian Church, Elder at Ardmore Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. He also served as director of the Merion Civic Association and was a member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia for 50 years. His memberships included the Rolling Green Golf Club, Merion Golf Club, Forest Lake Club, Orpheus Club of Philadelphia, and he was a founding member of the Silvan Opera Guild. Edgar will be remembered as a true gentleman—respected for his integrity, compassion, and gentle spirit. He was devoted to his family and set an enduring example of kindness and grace. In addition to his wife Marilyn, Edgar is survived by his sons, Dr. Brian Kunz and his wife Corinne, and David Kunz, Esq., and his wife Colleen; his grandchildren, Robertson and his wife Kelly, Scott, Hadley Rinaldi and her husband Richard, Daniel, Lindsay, and Nicholas; and his great-grandchildren, Beau and August Rinaldi.
