Tributes

Frances Presley Hardy, known to her friends as Dede, died suddenly at her home in Bryn Mawr, PA, on March 12, 2009. She was born in Wilmington, DE, on August 12,1951. In her early life her family moved frequently and she attended public schools n Texas and West Virginia before returning to Delaware and attended Tower Hill School. Here her studies were interrupted by two years of schooling in Japan. After her freshman year at Mills College in Oakland, CA, she transferred to Stanford University and graduated in 1973 with a degree in economics. Following brief jobs at brokerage firms of Merrill Lynch and Laird, Bissel & Meade, Frances began purchasing houses and upgrading them for resale. This activity brought her to Philadelphia where she successfully remodeled several properties. Finally she purchased a lovely home on 3 1/2 acres in Bryn Mawr, PA, where she lived the rest of her life, shared in later years, with Vero Beach, Fl. Frances loved athletics. In her school days she won many track awards in sprinting and jumping, including three Perm Relay medals. Later she played tennis at the Wilmington Country Club and Merion Cricket Club and golf at the Merion Golf Club. She was always impeccably dressed in classic style and spoke and wrote with a wide ranging vocabulary. Her generosity to her family, her friends, and to her community exceeded all normal obligations, but she especially enjoyed supporting animal care charities. At her home she reveled with childlike joy at the deer, foxes, squirrels and other wild life that lived on her property from time to time. A lady in every respect, the angels in heaven will recognize her as one of their own. Frances leaves behind her parents; John V.E. and Margaret S. Hardy of Vero Beach, Fl, her sister; Margaret O. Hardy of Savannah, GA, and her brothers; William H. Ill and Donna F. Hardy of Denver, Co, and John V. E. Jr. and Elizabeth P. Hardy of Bethesda, MD. Also remaining are Frances' nephews; John V. E. Hardy III, McEwen C. T. Hardy and William H. Hardy, IV. Condolences are extended to them all. A Memorial Service for friends and relatives will be held Friday, April 24, at 1:30 P.M. at the Church of the Redeemer, at Pennswood and New Gulph Roads in Bryn Mawr, PA.
