Marjorie W. Mackinney, died Saturday, September 8, 2012 at her Waverly Heights home in Gladwyne, PA. She was the beloved wife of Charles C. Mackinney, MD who predeceased her in 1994. Born June 30, 1921 in Roxborough, to Dr. G. Lloyd and Florence Wilson, Marjorie was a 1939 graduate of Roxborough High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in just three years, graduating in 1942. In 1943, Marjorie received her Master of Science in Education, also from the University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta sorority. Upon graduation, she taught third grade at Stonehurst Hills School in Upper Darby, PA. On June 17, 1944, she married Charles C. Mackinney and relocated to Chicago where she taught third grade at the Towne School while Charles attended medial school. Their two sons, C. Cyrus and Bruce, were born in Louisville, KY when Charles was stationed at Ft. Knox. They returned home to the Philadelphia area in 1953 when Charles was appointed to the staff of Lankenau Hospital. Their daughter Martha was born at Lankenau. Marjorie was a loving wife and mother. Accomplished at sewing, knitting, needlepoint and cooking, she also enjoyed bird watching, and volunteered at the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center presenting programs to elementary school age children. Marjorie was a member of the Jeptha Abbott chapter of the DAR and a member of Questers. Marjorie and Charles enjoyed spending time with their family at their summer home in Stone Harbor, NJ. After Charles’s retirement, they also enjoyed spending time during the winter months in Naples, FL. She took up golf “later in life” and enjoyed being outdoors and playing golf at Philadelphia County Club, Seaview County Club, and Hershey’s Mill. Traveling with Charles was another interest that was fulfilled and enjoyed, including trips to England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Africa, Japan, Hong Cong, and St. Croix. They had many wonderful times with a wide circle of friends, and friendships that lasted a life time. Marjorie was an active and dedicated participant in the plentiful and engaging activities offered at Waverly Heights. Marjorie was predeceased by her brother George Wilson, and is survived by her sons, Cy and Bruce, daughter-in-laws Phyllis and Christine, by her daughter Martha, and son-in-law Duane Parker. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Erin L. Mackinney and Madison I. Mackinney, sister-in-law Jean Wilson, and nephews Peter and Andrew. Marjorie’s high school yearbook described her as follows: “Marge is the most cheerful and energetic person we know. She is ever ready with her charming smile and overwhelming flow of personality which should take her far along the course toward her ambition”. In her 91 years, her ambitions became reality. The family wishes to thank the special women from Bayada Home Health Care and the entire staff at Waverly Heights for the kindness and wonderful care given to their Mother. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at The Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, on Saturday, September 22, at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the above named church, or to Caring People Alliance (earmark for Caring Paws Animal Assisted Therapy), R.W. Brown Community Center, 1701 North 8th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122.
