Susan Maxton Schofield passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by her family. Born November 5, 1940, in Tennessee, Susan lived a life full of elegance, warmth, deep faith, and an abiding love for the people she called her own. Susan was, in every sense, a woman of exceptional taste and grace. She earned her college degree at a time when few women did, then built a remarkable career through hard work and quiet determination. Beginning as a secretary at Shared Medical Systems, she rose to become Vice President of Corporate Events, planning high-level conferences for hospital executives and healthcare leaders across the globe. She served on the advisory board of the Four Seasons Hotel and became intimately familiar with some of the world's finest properties and destinations. The team she built along the way became lifelong friends, which speaks to the kind of colleague and person she was. One of Susan's greatest joys was sharing those experiences with her family. She brought her daughter Kim along on site visits and travels, and later gave her grandchildren memories they will carry for the rest of their lives. A stay at the Ritz-Carlton in New York City, with the concierge already expecting them and the best restaurants already lined up, was simply how Susan operated. And then back home in Pennsylvania, those same grandchildren would pile into her car for Saturday mornings at the farmer's market, cheesy dogs and ice cream, afternoons watching movies, and simply being at grandma's house. She had a gift for making every experience feel special, whether it cost a fortune or nothing at all. She also made sure her grandchildren knew how to conduct themselves in the world, teaching them their manners at the dinner table and how to carry themselves with grace. If you were going to have nice things, you were going to act accordingly. Susan was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kim; her husband, John Schofield; and her two sisters. Her relationship with Kim was something rare and beautiful, less mother and daughter than true best friends. When Kim passed, it was a loss Susan felt every day for the rest of her life. Even so, she never stopped showing up for her grandchildren, Sam and Connor, who brought her more joy than words can say. She sent birthday cards without fail, gave more than was probably warranted, and loved them with a completeness that left no room for doubt. Faith was a cornerstone of Susan's life. A longtime member of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, she later found a deep and lasting home at St. David's Church, where she volunteered, formed treasured friendships, and became an important part of the community. In the years following Kim's passing, she devoted herself to the church's grief ministries, offering comfort and companionship to others navigating similar loss. Outside of family and faith, Susan lived with great fullness. She played bridge, maintained friendships of real depth and loyalty, and was a warm and spirited presence at the country club. She had a sharp wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a way of commanding a room without ever seeming to try. For more than twenty-five years, she and John opened their Villanova home every Christmas to family and friends, filling it with music, laughter, and tradition that people looked forward to all year long. Susan will be remembered for her style, her strength, her generosity, and her warmth. But most of all, for the way she loved the people in her life, completely and unconditionally. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her legacy will live on through all whose lives she touched. A funeral service celebrating Susan's life will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church (Old Church) in Wayne, Pennsylvania, on July 9th at 12 pm. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in her memory.
