    Ann Smythe

    May 9, 1925 - May 1, 2022

Ann Virginia Stout Smythe, May 9, 1925 to May 1, 2022 Ann Smythe, 96, a longtime resident of Philadelphia, PA, Rochester, NY and Savannah, GA, passed away on May 1, 2022 at her home in Bryn Mawr, PA. Mrs. Smythe was the daughter of the late Ann Virginia Wetherill Stout and Morris Albert Stout Jr. She graduated from Germantown High School in January 1943 and completed an associate degree before joining the Winston Publishing Company, which ultimately led to her joining the accounting department of the J. L. N. Smythe Paper Company in Philadelphia. She met her future husband, Nevill, at the wedding of her brother. She and Nevill subsequently married in 1953. They raised six children in both Philadelphia, PA and Rochester, NY. Ann was able to balance work, schools, kids, camps, sports, and some summertime in Blue Hill, Maine over the years – no small feat to be sure. After Nevill’s retirement in 1987, they moved to Savannah, GA, moving back to Philadelphia area in 2002 to be closer to many of their children. Ann and Nevill spent their retirement summers in Blue Hill, Maine, where they enjoyed time with family, friends, golf, and time on and near the water at their long-time family home “Manor House.” Ann loved her family, golf, bare feet, and the family’s summer home and she will be laid to rest in Blue Hill, Maine with her late husband of 56 years, J. L. Nevill Smythe. Ann is survived by her two sons: T. H. Butler and J. L. Nevill (Karen), three daughters: Virginia Smythe Spofford, Elizabeth S. Kreuzer (Hank), and Patricia S. Shiley (Dave), her daughter-in-law, Bryn Johnston Smythe as well as eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her youngest son Christopher W. in 2003 and her husband Nevill in 2009. A private celebration of her life and graveside service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to: Development Office, The Jackson Laboratory, P. O. Box 254, Bar Harbor, ME 04609-0254 or https://www.jax.org/give/pages/make-a-donation.
