Kate Elizabeth DeRiel

KATE ELIZABETH DeRIEL (nee SILBER) Dec. 25, 1946 - Feb. 23, 2022 Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, Kate passed away peacefully on February 23, 2022 in Havertown. Her life was dedicated to family, education and service, bringing her light to those around her and drawing joy from deep friendships. Born in Boston to Maurice and Ruth (Murphy) Silber, Kate graduated from Smith College in 1968, later earned an M.Ed from St Joseph's and taught for 22 years at Coopertown School in Haverford Township. Kate married Jon Kimball "Kim" deRiel in 1969 and together raised 4 children. She was deeply committed to social justice, demonstrating through many volunteer roles – and her signature optimism and perseverance – her belief that making the world a better place starts with showing up. Kate was a member of the Haverford Township and Delaware County League of Women Voters, and found her spiritual home as a Quaker at Haverford Friends Meeting. She held a governance role for Friends School Haverford and served on the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Quaker Fund for Indigenous Communities. Kate's most treasured role was family matriarch, especially as beloved mother and grandmother, aka "Yia yia." She is deeply missed by her husband Kim, sisters Patricia (Jon) Lazzeri, and Ann Geneva, aunt Florence Gorman and cousins, nieces and nephews. Her memory is cherished by her children Eric (Ami), Emily (Mike), Elise (Guyltone), and Evan (Sandra), and by her greatest joy, grandchildren Winslow, Josephine, Saskia, Leonard and Ellinor.
