Joan D. Warren, 96, of Gladwyne, Pa., formerly a long-time resident of Villanova, Pa., died on January 6, 2026. Joan grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, the first of two children of the late Harry P. and Ethel S. Davis. She graduated from The Shipley School (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) in 1947 and Sweet Briar College (Virginia) in 1951, with an A.B. in Government. She was married to Andrew C. Warren for 59 years, until his death in 2012. They raised four children. Joan was a loyal and steadfast friend to many people and organizations. She was a Lower School teacher at The Agnes Irwin School in Wynnewood, Pa., for three years in the early 1950s. She returned to Agnes Irwin in 1974, which by then had moved to Rosemont, Pa., and worked for five years as a kindergarten assistant. In the early 1980s, she worked in the Education Department of the Philadelphia Orchestra. A long-time member of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, Joan served on the Altar Guild for 48 years and sang with the choir for more than 43 years. She was a volunteer Music Librarian at the church for 12 years, through 2024, helping to sort, catalogue, and file the more than 10,000 pieces of music in its collection. A gifted needle worker, she needlepointed one of the Redeemer’s eight new altar rail kneelers in 2011. Joan was a volunteer at Bryn Mawr Hospital for 48 years, contributing more than 11,800 hours of service, primarily in the Emergency Department. She also was a sustaining member of the Bryn Mawr Hospital Women’s Board, of which she had been a member since 1984. Joan spent more than 65 years volunteering at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, initially making fudge for the Candy Committee and, more recently, staffing the show’s Information Booth. Strong and athletic, Joan loved horses and rode until she was in her early 60s. She was an accomplished golfer; she and her husband were members of the Philadelphia Country Club and then the Merion Golf Club. She enjoyed spending winter Sunday afternoons walking local country fields with Skycastle French Hounds and, later, Silver Eagle Bassets. She was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable birdwatcher, a hobby that took her and her husband up and down the eastern seaboard as well as to Africa, Central America, South America, and Baffin Island. She reveled in traveling regularly to southeastern Arizona and spending time on Lake Megunticook in Lincolnville, Maine. She was a voracious reader and an inspired cook, somehow serving her family dinner at exactly 7:00 p.m. each night. A life-long lover of music, she took great pleasure in listening to all sorts of styles, ranging from classical and opera to country. Joan is survived by her children: Andrew C. Warren, Jr. (Elizabeth), Greer T. Warren (Paul Gold), Polly W. Coxe (Ted), and Michael D. Warren (Lisa); four grandchildren: Michael Warren, Jr. (Kelsey), Phillip Warren (Julia), Genevieve Warren, and Elyse Warren; and one great-grandson: Jackson Warren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry P. Davis, Jr. Friends are invited to a memorial service on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, PA, with a reception to follow. Interment will be private.
